Edge of Wilderness

Wilderness can be defined as a place that is unihabited and uncultivated, Roderick Nash however in his book Wilderness and the American Mind states "wilderness is what man thinks it is". Defining wilderness can be difficult and is often relative to a persons own social and cultural experiences - from their anthropocentric perspective. It is certainly true that what can be classed as wilderness varies from place to place and what maybe considered wilderness is nothing more than a wild place when compared to the vast inhopsitable regions of Alaska, Antartica or Siberia. It may be more appropriate to consider that often we are only on the edges of wilderness with such places providing a connection or conjured up image of a natural landscape  or perhaps allows for a wilderness experience, an escape from our urban lifestyles.

This body of work considers those places where although often not far from civilisation and safety the feeling of solitude has provided an almost spiritual experience of being part of the landscape yet overwhelmed by a feeling of insignificance in its vastness and sublime beauty. It is at such locations that as an urbanite seeking natures wilderness and being able to briefly disconnected from an urban existance I have stood on the edge of wilderness and peer into its consuming vastness.
